State Senator Joan Ballweg of Wisconsin has been working tirelessly to support the health and well-being of moms and babies in the state. As a member of the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board and the Co-Chair of the Wisconsin Legislative Children's Caucus, Senator Ballweg has authored legislation that aims to provide better healthcare coverage and support for new mothers.

In addition to her work on healthcare legislation, Senator Ballweg has also proposed updates to Wisconsin's Safe Haven Law. This law allows new parents who are unable or unwilling to care for their newborn to anonymously surrender the baby at a safe facility. Senator Ballweg's proposal, Senate Bill 369, would allow local hospitals, fire stations, or law enforcement agencies to install newborn infant safety devices, also known as Baby Boxes. These temperature-controlled and ventilated boxes are equipped with a dual alarm system and are under 24/7 surveillance, ensuring the safety of the surrendered babies.

The tree, planted in 2005 as a memorial to a World War II Army veteran, will be adorned with handmade ornaments donated by schools from across the state.
